A chilling tale unfolds before you. This is S-362. Not just any seaplane ramp. This is a piece of history a silent witness to the USS San Francisco’s incredible journey.

S-362. A seemingly ordinary seaplane ramp. However its story is far from ordinary. It was here in Honolulu that a significant chapter in naval history concluded. The USS San Francisco a Los Angeles-class nuclear attack submarine met a catastrophic event.

In 2005 the San Francisco collided with an uncharted undersea mountain. The impact was devastating. Many crew members suffered serious injuries. One tragically lost his life. The submarine was severely damaged. Yet remarkably the San Francisco survived. It limped back to Guam under its own power. A testament to its resilient design.

The damaged bow of the San Francisco needed extensive repair. This is where S-362 comes in. The bow section was replaced with one from its sister submarine the USS Honolulu. A sister ship soon to be retired. Honolulu’s bow was carefully removed. Then expertly welded onto the San Francisco. The process was meticulous.

The San Francisco rejoined the fleet. It served for another seven years. S-362 stood as a silent sentinel. Witnessing the San Francisco’s triumphant return. A reminder of its incredible resilience.

Today S-362 stands as a poignant reminder. It remembers the San Francisco’s struggle. It also remembers the bravery of its crew. Their heroic efforts ensured the submarine’s survival.

This seaplane ramp S-362 is more than just concrete and steel. It embodies the spirit of perseverance. It tells the tale of a submarine’s extraordinary journey. It is a fitting tribute to the resilience of human spirit and engineering prowess. A symbol of hope amidst the horrors of an unexpected collision. A story etched not in words but in the very structure of S-362.
