Dr. James P. Tillman Sr. had a revelation. This revelation led to the founding of Ruth Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. Ruth Memorial Missionary Baptist Church was organized on September 1, 1957. The church began in the humble home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Denard in Chicago, Illinois. Ruth Memorial Missionary Baptist Church is also known as “The Church With A Mission”. Dr. Tillman, the church’s organizer, was born in Joliet, Illinois. He served as pastor at other churches before founding Ruth Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. He had a deep passion for service. This passion extended beyond the church walls. Dr. Tillman was involved in various civic and religious organizations. He served as president of the Chicago Baptist Institute for thirteen years. He oversaw a major restoration of the institute’s original site. He held chaplain positions at Cage Memorial Chapel, Cook County Hospital, and Statesville Correctional Facility. He was a member of numerous committees and organizations. These included the NAACP, the Church Federation of Greater Chicago, and the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Dr. Tillman’s daughter, Teresa, described him as organized, a lover of children, and a strong role model. He valued family unity and had a good sense of humor. Dr. Tillman’s dedication to his community was recognized in 1992. The 8600-8700 block of Justine Street in Chicago was renamed in his honor. Dr. Tillman passed away in January 1995. His legacy continues to inspire the congregation of Ruth Memorial Missionary Baptist Church. The church carries on its mission under the leadership of its second pastor, Dr. Nathan L. Schaffer Jr. He is known as “The Pastor With a Shepherd’s Heart.”
