“Who was this man” I ask you. Before you stands the Rusznyák István Plaque a simple yet powerful testament to a remarkable life. This plaque doesn’t just mark a building. It tells the story of István Rusznyák a giant in the world of Hungarian medicine.

Born in Budapest in 1889 Rusznyák’s journey was one of exceptional intellect and unwavering dedication. He graduated from the Budapest University of Medical Sciences in 1911. His career took him to the city’s pathology department. He then served in the First World War before becoming a private professor lecturer.

Rusznyák’s rise continued. He directed the Department of Medicine at the University of Szeged. He even served as dean. Sadly like many others he faced the horrors of the Second World War. He and his family were deported. Incredibly they were released in Austria and returned to Budapest.

After the war Rusznyák became Head of the Department of Internal Medicine in Budapest. He was elected a full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This was an immense honor. Then came another astonishing achievement. In 1949 he became President of this prestigious academy. He held this position until 1970. A testament to his lasting influence.

His contributions to medicine were profound. Along with Albert Szent-Györgyi Rusznyák discovered Vitamin P. He demonstrated its chemical relationship to flavones. This discovery revolutionized our understanding of nutrition. His research also focused on the lymphatic system’s physiological and pathological significance. It also included studies on blood proteins. His work is still studied today by doctors and scientists worldwide.

His influence extended beyond the laboratory. He was the president of the Hungarian-Soviet Society and held positions within the Physicians’ and Health Workers’ Trade Union. He served in the National Assembly for many years.

Rusznyák’s legacy is immense. The Rusznyák István Plaque serves as a reminder. It is a tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his country and to the pursuit of knowledge. He received numerous awards including the Lomonosov Gold Medal from the USSR Academy of Sciences. This is a mark of international recognition. His publications enriched both Hungarian and international medical literature. He even served as editor for prestigious medical journals.

As you stand here in front of the plaque remember. This isn’t just stone and bronze. It’s a story of resilience innovation and remarkable achievement. It’s the story of István Rusznyák. A legacy that deserves to be remembered. A legacy that continues to inspire. A legacy we celebrate here before his plaque.
