“Pushkin combined Russia and Turkey in his work.” This resonates deeply as we stand before the Russian Museum in Antalya. The museum is part of the International Moscow School. Most Russian students attend here in this Mediterranean province of Antalya.

But why a Russian Museum here in Turkey? It’s a story of cultural connections and shared appreciation. This museum honors Alexander Pushkin. He is Russia’s most famous poet and founder of modern Russian literature. The museum opened to mark his 220th birth anniversary. Many events were held in Turkey to celebrate the poet’s birthday.

Imagine Pushkin himself. He was born in Moscow in 1799. His grandfather was a black man. He came to Russia via Istanbul. He was a slave for Czar Peter the Great. This detail alone highlights the intertwined histories of Russia and Turkey.

Rustem Valiahmetov is the coordinator of the museum. He noted Pushkin’s connection to Turkey. Though the Czar banned him from leaving Russia, Pushkin visited Turkey’s eastern province of Erzurum in 1829. Later, he wrote “Journey to Arzrum”. This travelogue captures his experiences. This year marks 190 years since his travel to Turkey.

Interestingly, there are plans for a similar museum in Russia. It will open after a ceremony in the Russian parliament on Pushkin’s birthday, June 6. This shows how significant Pushkin is to Russian culture. It also shows the importance of sharing his legacy internationally.

The Russian Museum also showcases Soviet lifestyle. It is the biggest Museum of Soviet Lifestyle. It is the ninth around the world. Kazan entrepreneur Rustem Valiakhmetov launched this project in Kazan in 2011.

The Antalyan branch is the largest. It occupies 980 square meters. The Moscow International School provided the space. The museum features items from the museum’s reserves in Russia.

Lyubov Dukelskaya is the president of the Moscow International School. She mentioned that tourists pay 15 lira to enter the school museum. Schoolchildren and their parents enter free.

Furthermore, Valiakhmetov helped create the Pushkin Museum and Andrey Karlov’s museum. Karlov was the Russian Ambassador to Turkey.

Urban authorities in Antalya paid close attention to the museum’s creation. They checked for any exhibits with rebellion or anti-Turkish slogans. The interaction with officials was warm and friendly.

The museum doesn’t focus on festivities or office parties. Instead, it concentrates on cementing the brand and making it recognizable. There’s even a vision to create a museum dedicated to Turkish lifestyle of the same era.

Valiakhmetov and his friends started collecting Soviet items as students in 1991. This passion evolved into the Museum of Socialistic Lifestyle. During Kazan’s dilapidated house demolition program, the museum acquired many exhibits.

Valiakhmetov calls his museum project “museum fast food”. It offers a warm atmosphere. Visitors can experience it without needing special training. Influential and famous people also see their childhood and adolescence reflected on the walls.

The Russian Museum in Antalya stands as a bridge. It connects cultures. It preserves history. It offers a glimpse into both Russian literary heritage and Soviet daily life. Take a moment to appreciate this unique blend. It enriches Antalya’s cultural landscape.
