The Russian Hill-Macondray Lane District is a 1.6-acre historic district. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on January 7, 1988. The listing was for the architecture. The area is roughly bound by Green Street, Jones Street, Macondray Lane, and Taylor Street. The listing included 12 contributing buildings. Macondray Lane is a contributing site. Only four of the houses survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The oldest surviving house in the district is at 982 Green Street. It was built in 1878.
Most early residents had middle-class careers. There were a few exceptions on Green Street at the top of the hill. Residents worked in the arts. There were also Italian-Americans, some from Genoa.
