Picture eight hectares. That is about the size of Rupp-hegy. It stands alone surrounded by Budapest’s District XI. This small hill is a natural treasure. It’s the easternmost part of the Csíki Mountains. These hills stretch from Budaörs to South Buda.

Rupp-hegy got its name from a former owner. His name was György Rupp. He was a citizen of Buda. But there is also Pösingermajor nearby. That area is named after Ferenc Pösinger. He arrived in Buda in 1688.

Today, Rupp-hegy is a protected area. It has been under protection since 1977. The Főkert Nonprofit Zrt cares for it now.

Getting here is easy. Take the 8E bus. Get off at Irhás árok. Then walk on the Törökbálinti road. In about five minutes, you will arrive at Rupp-hegy.

A nature trail shows off the hill’s beauty. The path is easy to walk. It starts in a forest of linden and oak trees. Later, the forest thins. You will see grassy slopes and dolomite rocks.

From the top of Rupp-hegy, enjoy the view. You can see Gazdagrét housing estate. The Széchenyi-hegy and Tétényi Plateau are also visible. The trail down is steeper. It leads back to the start.

Rupp-hegy may be small. But it has a wide variety of plants. There are 400 species. Thirty-eight are protected. These include orchids.

In the past, miners dug here. They extracted weathered dolomite. It was used as a paint ingredient. These cavities can still be seen. The hill is rich in minerals. You can find flint, quartz, goethite, hematite and calcite.

A five-stop nature trail guides you. Information boards tell about the hill’s history. They also explain its geology and wildlife. Staying on the trail is important. Protected plants cover the ground. Rupp-hegy is a favorite spot for botanists.

The northern slopes have oak and hornbeam forests. The top and southern slopes feature dolomite grasslands. Look for the purple orchid. It is a special plant here.

Many animals live on Rupp-hegy too. Protected insects include the saddle-backed bush cricket. Also look for the forest bug. Birds such as the chiffchaff and wryneck are here. Even the kestrel and common buzzard live here. Swifts from Gazdagrét hunt here too.

From the hilltop clearing, enjoy the view of Budapest and Budaörs. A metal pole and flag mark the highest point of Rupp-hegy.

Rupp-hegy is open all year. It is free to visit. It is a place of natural beauty. It is waiting to be explored.
