Gazing across the rugged terrain of Rumipamba Archaeological Park, can you sense the echoes of ancient civilizations? Rumipamba, meaning “rocky field” in Quechua, stretches from the slopes of Pichincha Volcano. This park whispers tales of a time long before the Spanish conquistadors arrived. Rumipamba was once a thriving indigenous village, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Quitu-Cara people and other groups who called this place home. In 1990, a surprising discovery during apartment construction unveiled Rumipamba’s hidden treasures. A worker stumbled upon clay vessels containing skeletal remains, halting construction and prompting an extensive excavation. Archaeologist Alfredo Santamaría unearthed graves, pottery, tools, and remnants of dwellings, revealing a rich history spanning centuries. Today, Rumipamba Archaeological Park protects these precious remnants from further development. Within this park, you’ll encounter traces of three distinct cultural periods. The Late Formative period (1500 BCE to 500 BCE) showcases ancient tools, highlighting the early inhabitants’ resourcefulness. The Regional Development period (500 BCE to 500 CE) is marked by deep tombs and unique tripod-footed pottery, evidence of a more complex social structure. Finally, the Integration Period (500 CE to 1500 CE) reveals sturdy huts and shallow graves, offering insights into Quitu burial practices. The inhabitants of Rumipamba were masterful engineers. They reshaped the hillside, constructing retaining walls to protect their homes from seasonal floods. These walls, built with andesite stones and a mixture of sand, earth, and volcanic ash, still stand in some areas. Rumipamba was also a center for textile production. Workshops once buzzed with activity as wool was processed, dyed, and transformed into vibrant attire. Replicas of mud huts with thatched roofs dot the landscape, providing a glimpse into daily life in this ancient village. A scenic lookout offers breathtaking views of downtown Quito, connecting the past with the present. Start your exploration at the park’s main museum.
