Consider this beam slicing through the night. This light comes from Rumeli Feneri. The Rumeli Feneri lighthouse stands tall. It marks the entrance to the Black Sea. It also guides ships into the Bosphorus Strait.

Rumeli Feneri has a rich history. It played a crucial role during the Crimean War. The French built it in 1856. This was to ensure safe passage for warships. These ships belonged to France and Britain. They were entering from the Black Sea.

Rumeli Feneri means “Greekland Lighthouse”. It is named so in Turkish. This is because of its location in relation to former Ottoman lands. Rumeli refers to Ottoman territories west of the Bosphorus. Anadolu Feneri stands opposite it. It is on the Asian side of the strait.

Imagine the strategic importance of this location. The two lighthouses stand 2 nautical miles apart. A line between them marks Istanbul’s port boundary. Legend says these points were once the Symplegades. In Greek myth, they were clashing rocks. They destroyed passing ships.

The French operated Rumeli Feneri until 1933. Then, Turkish authorities took control. Today, the Coastal Safety Authority maintains it. This ensures the lighthouse continues its vital function.

The lighthouse itself is an impressive structure. It stands 30 meters tall. Its height above sea level is 58 meters. This makes Rumeli Feneri the tallest lighthouse in Turkey. It has a two-stage octagonal shape. Its white tower and lantern stand out.

Originally, kerosene fueled the light. Later, they switched to Dalén light with acetylene gas. Now, electricity powers it. A butane gas system serves as backup. The Fresnel lens focuses the light. It flashes white every 12 seconds. The range is 18 nautical miles. That is about 33 kilometers.

The lighthouse is more than a navigational aid. It is also a historical site. Visitors can explore its grounds. Inside, you can find a tomb. It belongs to Sarı Saltuk, a Muslim saint. This adds a spiritual dimension to the site.

Rumeli Feneri is a sentinel. It watches over the meeting point of the Bosphorus and Black Sea. The village shares the lighthouse’s name. It is a quiet fishing village. It offers a glimpse into a simpler life. It contrasts with Istanbul’s urban bustle.

The lighthouse stands as a reminder of maritime history. It also highlights the importance of safe navigation. Its light continues to shine. It guides ships and welcomes visitors alike. It links the past with the present. Its beam offers direction and hope.
