Imagine a grand vizier. He once walked this very ground. He envisioned a house of worship. That vision became the Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque.

Welcome to the Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque in Üsküdar. This is a significant piece of Istanbul’s Ottoman history. The Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque is the first mosque built on the Asian side after the city’s takeover. That takeover marked the end of the Eastern Roman Empire.

The Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque was completed in 1471. It was commissioned by Grand Vizier Rum Mehmed Pasha. He was of Greek origin.

Look closely at the Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque. You will see a unique blend of architectural styles. Ottoman and Byzantine elements intertwine. Stone and brick create its strong structure. This blend reflects the city’s rich, layered past.

The mosque’s design is quite distinctive. It features an inverted T plan. The central dome is supported by a half dome. This supports it toward the mihrab. This design marks it as an early example of Ottoman architecture in Üsküdar.

Notice the transition to the dome. It is achieved through alternating stone and brickwork. Pendentives also play a role. These architectural details add to the mosque’s unique character.

Take note of the minaret’s balcony. The cube section is decorated with muqarnas. These stalactite-like carvings enhance its beauty. The minaret stands tall and cylindrical. It is a proud symbol.

Restoration work has shaped the mosque’s appearance. In 1950, the narthex was covered with wood. A later restoration in 1953 reorganized the five-domed narthex. Wavy eaves were added to the minaret facade and dome. These changes added to the mosque’s character over time.

Explore the graveyard at the back of the Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque. You will find an ancient olive tree. The türbe is also located here. Inside, a ghostly turban rests atop Rum Mehmed Pasha’s grave.

Sadly, some parts of the original complex are now gone. The madrasah bathhouse and soup kitchen no longer exist. Only the Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque and the tomb remain.

The Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque stands as a testament to time. It blends cultures and styles. It represents Istanbul’s diverse heritage. As you leave, remember the grand vizier’s vision. Remember the blend of Byzantine and Ottoman artistry. Carry with you the echoes of history that resonate within these walls of the Rum Mehmed Pasha Mosque.
