Follow the murmur of the Ruisseau de Rochecardon. Feel its gentle presence. This unassuming stream holds secrets. It whispers tales of centuries past.

The Ruisseau de Rochecardon is more than just water. It’s a historical artery. It flows through Lyon’s history. It has witnessed the rise and fall of empires. It has seen families rise to power.

In the 14th century a miller named Henry Chevrier owned mills along the stream. One was at Roche. He was among the first known owners in the area. The area was then known as Roche de Vaise. Later in the 15th century the Rolland family owned the land before selling it in 1515. The Camus family took over. Jean Camus a spice merchant and royal secretary owned it. His son Claude was a royal advisor. The family’s tenure continued through several generations.

In 1620 the Camus family sold the estate to Horace Cardon a Lyon printer. Cardon was of Catalan origin. He had been ennobled in 1605. He was known as the Lord of Roche. His name added to Roche created the name Rochecardon. His legacy lives on in the chateau. It shows a Renaissance style. He built the hexagonal tower. Its the most striking feature. The chapel and a plane tree avenue are his works. Several fountains and statues have sadly been lost over time.

The stream provided water for the mills. It powered the wheels. It once fed a pond. This pond served a lock for downstream mills. Rochecardon was a large estate. It had woods. Forests extended to the Saône River. The Chateau de Rochecardon stands as a testament to this history. It is a stunning example of architectural preservation.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau spent time at Rochecardon. He was a guest of the Boy de la Tour family. They corresponded with him. He even commissioned fur clothing inspired by Armenian fashion. His love of botany flourished there. He even stayed in the dovecote. He gifted Madame Boy de la Tour a pastel portrait. The family treasured it until 1911.

Many families owned the estate over time. Each left their mark. The Cardons. The Vielles. The Vionnets. The Boys de la Tour. The Sandrins and the Bergers. Each added to the tapestry of Rochecardon’s story. Their history is woven into the very fabric of the land.

Today the chateau is a condominium. The Ruisseau de Rochecardon continues its flow. It is a quiet witness to Lyon’s vibrant history. It is a reminder of the passage of time. It flows on.
