From the ashes of a forgotten factory, a city rose. We stand before the Ruinas de la Fábrica de Ladrillos Ctibor, a testament to the ambition and ingenuity of Francisco Ctibor. This isn’t just a pile of bricks; it’s the skeleton of La Plata. In the late 19th century, La Plata was a city on the rise, a planned metropolis in need of a building material. Enter Francisco Ctibor, a Czech engineer who had worked on the Eiffel Tower and the Panama Canal. He saw the potential in a dilapidated brick factory in Ringuelet, on the outskirts of La Plata. Ctibor revitalized the factory, transforming it into a state-of-the-art operation. The Hoffmann kilns, a marvel of the Industrial Revolution, churned out millions of bricks, each stamped “F. Ctibor.” These bricks formed the foundation of La Plata’s iconic structures: the Cathedral, the Government House, the Courthouse, and countless other buildings. They even traveled beyond La Plata, finding their way into the construction of the Buenos Aires subway and landmarks like the Kavanagh Building. Ctibor’s vision extended beyond bricks and mortar. He built a community for his workers, complete with housing, a health center, a police station, and shops. This community became the seed of present-day Ringuelet. The Ruinas de la Fábrica de Ladrillos Ctibor stand as a reminder of this legacy. The very bricks we see here might have once graced the walls of the Governor’s mansion or echoed with the footsteps of bustling workers. The Museo del Ladrillo, housed in the factory’s former administrative offices, preserves the tools, machinery, and documents that tell the story of Ctibor and his workers. The Ctibor family continued the brick-making tradition, moving to a new plant in the Abasto Industrial Park in 1998. The Ruinas de la Fábrica de Ladrillos Ctibor, however, remain a powerful symbol of La Plata’s origins, a monument to the man whose bricks built a city.
