Have you ever wondered what a castle’s history is, by just looking at it? Rugaard, a striking Renaissance manor in Denmark, is a perfect example. This imposing castle, set like a crown on a hill overlooking the shimmering Kattegat sea, has witnessed turbulent times. Its history, like its surrounding landscape, is marked by the stark beauty of the Danish countryside, but also by the dark shadow of witch hunts. In the 1680s, Rugaard was owned by Jorgen Arenfeldt, a nobleman who became infamous for his harsh persecution of those accused of witchcraft. He subjected suspected witches to the “water test” in the manor’s moat, a cruel practice that led to many unjust deaths. Arenfeldt’s actions drew the attention of the Danish Supreme Court. He was ultimately penalized for his abuses, marking a turning point in the fight against witch hunts in Denmark. After Arenfeldt’s reign, Rugaard passed through several hands. In the 19th century, Ferdinand Mourier-Petersen, a passionate conservationist, became the owner. He saw the potential of the land around the castle and planted forests on barren ground. He also played a pivotal role in founding Hedeselskabet, a national movement dedicated to transforming infertile heathlands into fertile farmlands. Today, Rugaard continues to be a testament to its past. The manor, now owned by the Mourier-Petersen family, still stands proudly, a symbol of Denmark’s rich history, both dark and bright.
