“A lane named ‘of the Woods’? In the heart of Paris?” a surprised voice might exclaim. And indeed, the Ruelle du Bois, tucked away in our bustling city, seems to whisper a forgotten story. This little lane, my friends, is a charming reminder of Paris’s past, a time when this city wasn’t all grand boulevards and monuments. The Ruelle du Bois gets its name from the Bois des Rigones, a wood that once stood here in the 14th century. Imagine, a woodland stretching out where we now stand! It was located at the foot of the Butte de Beauregard, which was the name once given to the slopes of Belleville. Sadly, the woods are long gone, replaced by the Quartier de la Mouzaïa. But the name Ruelle du Bois remains, a whimsical echo of a greener, wilder Paris.
