Whispers of the past linger here. Before you stands Ruelle de la Maladrerie. Its very name evokes a chilling history. A history of lepers and isolation. For centuries this unassuming street held a dark secret. A secret hidden in plain sight.

Ruelle de la Maladrerie is more than just a street. It is a reminder of a medieval leper colony. Imagine the lives of those forced to live here. Outcasts shunned by society. They suffered from a disease misunderstood and feared. This small lane was their world. Their prison. Their only home.

The leper colony. It was not just a place of suffering. It enjoyed rights and exemptions. The colony’s wines were even tax-exempt. Its possessions were substantial. The lepers were treated as outcasts. They were objects of repulsion. Upon diagnosis they were confined to the leper colony. A somber ceremony preceded their confinement. A death-like office was chanted over them. They listened dressed in black robes. They were placed between two trestles to represent a coffin.

But the Ruelle de la Maladrerie’s story doesn’t end there. King Louis XIV ordered the colony’s closure in 1695. He integrated its assets into Hôtel-Dieu’s holdings. The buildings dilapidated and were destroyed. To memorialize this place the villagers erected a calvary. It was sadly destroyed during the Revolution. Another calvary was built in 1804. Today only the street name remains.

This narrow street holds echoes of those who lived and died here. It serves as a sobering reminder of a bygone era. The Ruelle de la Maladrerie stands as a testament to resilience. It also reminds us of the importance of compassion. Remember the forgotten. The outcasts. The people who once called this place home. Their story lives on in the very name of this Parisian street. Ruelle de la Maladrerie. A name that speaks volumes.
