On a crisp autumn day, let’s unravel the story of Rue Varichon. Rue Varichon stretches from Avenue Paul Santy towards the south. It ends at Rue Pégout. Rue Varichon sits beside the modern theater of Lyon’s 8th district. Pedestrians can easily walk around the theater to reach Boulevard des États-Unis. A newly developed walkway at the north end of Rue Varichon extends towards Avenue Frère. On its west side, Rue Varichon runs alongside community facilities. These include a square, the Kennedy gymnasium, a basketball court, and a schoolyard. The schoolyard, enclosed by a low fence and railing, faces small, connected houses. Past Rue de la Concorde, slightly larger houses line both sides of Rue Varichon. These houses are set back, with low walls marking the street alignment. Two more houses stand on the final section of Rue Varichon. This is past Rue Rochambeau, opposite two sides of the Pergaud school. A name etched on the war memorial of Saint-Pothin church might offer a clue. Louis Varichon’s name appears there. Rue Varichon initially began as a dead end, lined with houses on its east side, facing market gardens. It was later opened onto Rue Rochambeau sometime after 1931. Schools arrived around 1960. The extension to Rue Pégout gave Rue Varichon its current form. The Kennedy school center on Rue Varichon offers both academic and athletic activities. You can also find a car dealership business there. Rue Varichon is easy to access. Nearby public transport options include the 26, 34, C15, C25, and C16 bus lines. If you’re traveling by tram, look for the T4 line. The closest bus stop is conveniently named “Varichon.”
