Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Lyon’s 7th arrondissement, lies Rue Simon Fryd. It’s a seemingly ordinary street, yet it holds an extraordinary story. Rue Simon Fryd is named after a young Polish resistance fighter. Simon Fryd, born in 1922, arrived in Lyon in 1942 seeking refuge. He joined the FTP-MOI resistance group, Carmagnole Battalion. He became a key figure, crafting bombs and participating in daring operations against the occupying forces. His bravery and commitment are etched into the very fabric of this street. One fateful day, May 29th, 1943, Simon participated in a raid to secure food ration tickets. A confrontation erupted. Simon, armed with two pistols, exchanged fire with the police. Wounded in the leg, he was captured. Despite a false identity, his true name, Simon Fryd, was discovered. At his residence on Rue Boileau, the police unearthed bomb-making materials. Simon Fryd was sentenced to death. He was guillotined in the courtyard of Saint-Paul Prison on December 4th, 1943, at the young age of 21. His final letter urged his sisters to remember him and avenge his death. His plea was answered. Just days later, the judge who condemned him was assassinated by Simon’s comrades. The resistance group honored their fallen comrade. They named a detachment after him. Today, Rue Simon Fryd serves as a quiet yet powerful reminder of his sacrifice. It’s a testament to the courage of a young man who fought for freedom in the heart of Lyon.
