Imagine walking along Rue Saint-Séverin, a narrow street in Paris’ Latin Quarter. This street is only 170 meters long, but it’s full of history, culture, and life. It gets its name from a nearby church, Église Saint-Séverin, which is one of the oldest churches still standing on the Left Bank. The church dates back to the 13th century, and it’s filled with beautiful architecture in the Flamboyant Gothic style, which is known for its ornate and flowing ornamentation. It’s not a surprise that the church and the street have played a big part in the life of the Sorbonne, the famous university, which was founded just across the river Seine in 1215! The university was relocated to the Left Bank because the theology school attached to Notre Dame de Paris had become too popular and crowded, and since then, Saint-Séverin has welcomed scholars from across Europe. Rue Saint-Séverin is also home to several buildings that date back to the 17th century, including an old rotisserie, a hotel, and a few shops. If you happen to be walking down the street, take a moment to stop and admire the architecture, imagine the bustling student life, and feel the history. Rue Saint-Séverin is a small part of Paris but holds a great deal of importance in its own right.
