How many streets can boast of being named after a lawyer? Rue Saint-Sabin can. This charming street in the 11th arrondissement, Rue Saint-Sabin, draws its name from a figure who played a significant role in 18th-century Paris: Charles-Pierre d’Angelesme de Saint-Sabin. This distinguished gentleman was not only a lawyer but also served as the city’s échevin, a position akin to a municipal official, from 1775 to 1777. The street’s history, however, runs deeper than its namesake. Rue Saint-Sabin initially emerged as part of the defensive network established during the reign of King Charles V. This area once formed the outer path running alongside the formidable moat that guarded the city. The very path we are on now, now Rue Saint-Sabin, was once a key element of Paris’s fortifications. And just imagine, from 1825 to 1860, the tranquil waters of the Canal Saint-Martin flowed beneath, temporarily dividing the street into two sections. The street we see today is also a result of mergers. In 1868, the petite rue Saint-Pierre, nestled between rue du Chemin-Vert and rue Amelot, was integrated into Rue Saint-Sabin, further shaping its character. As you explore further, take note of the unique architectural tapestry that lines Rue Saint-Sabin. Each building, with its own story, contributes to the street’s enduring charm.
