In 1764, desperate residents of the burgeoning Faubourg-Saint-Honoré district penned a plea to King Louis XV. They needed a church, a spiritual heart for their community. This request set in motion the creation of the Rue Saint-Philippe and its magnificent centerpiece, the Église Saint-Philippe-du-Roule. Rue Saint-Philippe, a street steeped in history and elegance, owes its existence to this royal decree. The church, designed by Jean-François Chalgrin, the architect of the Arc de Triomphe, was envisioned as a grand neoclassical structure. Construction of the Église Saint-Philippe-du-Roule began in 1772 on Rue Saint-Philippe, replacing a dilapidated chapel. The church’s design, echoing a Roman temple, aimed to reflect the grandeur of the era. However, financial constraints led to the omission of the planned bell towers. Despite this setback, the Église Saint-Philippe-du-Roule on Rue Saint-Philippe became a symbol of the neighborhood’s growth and sophistication. The church’s interior, a masterpiece of neoclassical design, houses stunning works of art. The rotunda above the choir showcases Théodore Chassériau’s dramatic “Descent from the Cross.” The Chapel of the Virgin, located at the east end of the church, is a jewel box of intricate decoration, featuring sculptures and paintings depicting the Virgin Mary’s life. Adding to the church’s allure are the vibrant stained-glass windows lining the side aisles, illustrating scenes from the lives of Saint Philip and Saint John. These colorful additions, created by Emile Hirsch in the late 19th century, beautifully complement the church’s neoclassical style on Rue Saint-Philippe. Today, the Rue Saint-Philippe, along with its magnificent church, stands as a testament to the vision of its residents and the artistry of Chalgrin. The street, nestled near the bustling Champs-Élysées, exudes a quiet charm that belies its rich history. A visit to Rue Saint-Philippe and the Église Saint-Philippe-du-Roule offers a glimpse into the heart of 18th-century Parisian life, a blend of religious devotion and architectural brilliance.
