“Rochambeau. A name echoing through time.” Ever wondered why a street in Lyon bears the name Rue Rochambeau? Let’s uncover its story.

Rue Rochambeau begins on Rue Combes. It ends on Rue Beauvisage. This rectilineal street is quite wide. It was opened in the 1930s.

The first section of Rue Rochambeau runs alongside buildings. These buildings are part of the Cité des États-Unis. Look at their windows. They are in a dihedral shape. A counter alley runs behind them. On the walls are frescoes. They depict Ivoirian, Mexican, Indian, and Egyptian ideal cities.

The north side is less built-up. Here, you’ll see ALBEU buildings. They are spread across a large area. Among them is house number 13. It stands out with an arched door. The door is divided. One half opens. The other is closed. It features stained glass fragments.

After Rue Sarrazin, Rue Rochambeau passes between houses. These houses have gardens behind them. Many houses share a similar design. A first level sits above steps. The second level has a window under a roof.

Past Rue Varichon, houses continue on the north side. Opposite them stands a large gray block. It’s the École Pergaud with its three buttresses.

Now, who was Rochambeau? Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau, was born in 1725. He died in 1807. Rochambeau was a Marshal of France. His military career was impressive. It culminated in the victory at Yorktown. This victory secured American independence. He finished his career as general of the Army of the North.

It makes sense to name a street after him. Especially one near the Cité des États-Unis. Though Rochambeau had no apparent ties to Lyon.

On Rue Rochambeau, you’ll find the École Louis Pergaud. It has been teaching primary school students since 1960. ALBEU is also located here. This association focuses on sports, particularly boules. You can practice boules at Avenir Laique Bachut Etats-Unis/Albeu 3 rue Rochambeau.

As you walk along Rue Rochambeau, consider its layers of history. From the frescoes to the school, each element contributes to its unique character. Next time you’re navigating Lyon, remember the story behind Rue Rochambeau, a tribute to a military hero and a street with its own distinct identity.
