Did Robert Jumel ever imagine a Parisian street would bear his name? Here on Rue Robert Jumel, we celebrate a man of remarkable bravery. Robert Jumel, born in 1920, answered de Gaulle’s call in 1940. He left his studies in industrial design, his mother, and his sisters in Brittany. He made a daring escape to England on a fisherman’s boat. Rue Robert Jumel stands as a testament to his commitment to freedom. Jumel quickly enlisted in the Free French Forces. He trained at Camberley camp before deploying to Equatorial Africa in 1941. He joined the Chad Senegalese Rifle Regiment, a part of the Leclerc Column. From the deserts of Chad to the battlefields of France, Jumel’s courage never wavered. He fought in the Fezzan campaign in Libya, earning the Croix de Guerre. He then became part of the legendary 2nd Armored Division under General Leclerc. Rue Robert Jumel is more than just a street; it’s a thread in the tapestry of Parisian history. Jumel landed in Normandy in 1944 and played a key role in liberating Paris. He was cited for destroying an anti-tank weapon hindering their advance. He continued fighting eastward, repelling German attacks near Vatimesnil. Tragically, on November 2, 1944, Jumel’s bravery met its end in the Vosges Mountains. He was killed during a patrol in Baccarat. Rue Robert Jumel echoes his sacrifice and the fight for liberty. Though his life was cut short, his legacy lives on, not just in this street name, but in the hearts of those who remember his sacrifice. He was posthumously awarded the title of Companion of the Liberation, a testament to his unwavering dedication to freedom.
