Have you ever heard of the famous French Resistance fighter, Rino Della Negra? Rue Rino Della Negra is literally a street named after a true hero of the fight for France’s liberation. This street sits quietly in Argenteuil, a town just north of Paris. The man himself was born in Vimy, a town in the north of France, in 1923. He moved with his Italian family to Argenteuil when he was just three years old. Rino was very athletic. He played football for a local team, but when war reached France, he refused to work in Germany. He joined the resistance.
In 1943, he joined the FTP (Francs-Tireurs Partisans), an underground group. Rino took part in several attacks against the German occupying forces, including shooting a Nazi general and attacking the Italian Fascist Party headquarters. Unfortunately, he was arrested and executed in 1944, just 20 years old.
Today, Rue Rino Della Negra serves as a reminder of a young athlete and resistance fighter who sacrificed his life for his country and the freedom of France. It is a constant reminder that even in the darkest of times, bravery and hope can prevail.
