Gazing upon Rue René Leduc in Argenteuil, one might not immediately grasp the sheer audacity of the man whose name it bears. This street isn’t just a pathway; it’s a testament to a visionary who dared to dream beyond the propellers of his time, a man named René Leduc. Rue René Leduc reminds us of his factory, once humming with the ambition of shattering the sound barrier. Here in Argenteuil, Leduc’s legacy takes root, not just in the street sign, but in the very spirit of innovation that permeates the air.

René Leduc, born in 1898, wasn’t destined for a life confined to the ordinary. His early life was a mix of practical experience and relentless curiosity. He worked as a mechanic, a clerk, and served his country in World War I, emerging as a decorated officer. But his true calling lay in the realm of engineering. After graduating from Supélec, he dedicated his life to the pursuit of speed, to the then-fantastical notion of flight beyond the limits of conventional aircraft.

Leduc’s fascination with thermodynamics and materials led him to the revolutionary concept of the ramjet engine, a simpler, more powerful engine than the traditional propeller. He secured his first patent in 1930, a precursor to the pulse jet. However, he didn’t stop there. He continued refining his design, eventually patenting the “thermo-propulsive nozzle” in 1933, later known as the ramjet. This became the heart of his groundbreaking aircraft designs.

With support from Louis Breguet and the French government, Leduc built his first experimental aircraft, the Leduc 010. Imagine the scene in 1949: the 010, strapped to the back of a larger aircraft, takes to the skies. Then, at 13,123 feet and 267 mph, it detaches, ignites its ramjet, and roars into the history books as the first aircraft solely powered by ramjet technology. It reached 423 mph in a mere nine minutes, a testament to Leduc’s genius.

Further innovations followed. The Leduc 016, 021, and finally, the 022, each pushing the boundaries of speed and altitude. The 022, equipped with a turbojet for independent takeoff, was his ultimate vision, a supersonic interceptor. Despite setbacks and the eventual cancellation of the program due to budget constraints, Leduc’s work had irrevocably changed the landscape of aviation.

Forced to leave aircraft manufacturing, Leduc founded Hydro Leduc in Azerailles, shifting his innovative spirit to hydraulics. But Rue René Leduc in Argenteuil stands as a constant reminder of his audacious pursuit of speed, a testament to the man who dared to reach for the skies beyond the reach of propellers. His legacy lives on, not just in this street name but also in the continued pursuit of innovation in aviation and engineering.
