Perhaps a man’s name on a street sign tells a silent story. That’s definitely the case here on Rue Raymond Jeannot. Raymond Jeannot was not just anyone. He was a figure of resistance during a dark period in French history.

Let’s delve into the past. Raymond Jeannot was born on September 19 1917 in Vitry-sur-Seine. His father worked as a mechanic. Raymond became a skilled carpenter at STCRP. He also became a dedicated communist activist in Vitry-sur-Seine.

During the tumultuous years of 1939-1940 Raymond served his country. Demobilized in March 1941 he returned to his trade. He worked as a carpenter for the Compagnie générale des eaux. But his commitment to resist the German occupation led him down a dangerous path.

Jeannot’s involvement in the French Resistance put him in the crosshairs. He was apprehended on June 23 1942. The arrest followed interrogations related to the Tintelin affair. The police accused him of meeting with a significant figure in the communist organization. This meeting allegedly took place on June 4 1942 at Place Saint-Augustin.

Raymond denied the charges. He claimed the person in question was Pierre. According to Raymond he was a comrade from the Touring Club de France. However the police did not identify this militant.

Under the pseudonym Guy Raymond Jeannot held a crucial position. He was the regional political leader of the Communist Youth. Records also show him as a detachment leader. He also served as a commissioner of operations.

Tragically Raymond Jeannot was executed as a hostage. This execution happened with others arrested in connection with the Tintelin affair. His life was cut short. He died for his beliefs and his commitment to freedom.

In recognition of his sacrifice the municipal council of Vitry-sur-Seine honored him. On April 26 1945 they named a street after him. This street is now Rue Raymond Jeannot.

Posthumously Raymond Jeannot received the rank of sub-lieutenant in the French Forces of the Interior. In 1955 he was recognized as a political internee. However the title of Resistant Internee was denied to him in 1956.

Rue Raymond Jeannot serves as a reminder. It commemorates a man who stood against oppression. It serves as a symbol of courage and sacrifice in the face of tyranny. As you walk along Rue Raymond Jeannot take a moment to reflect on his story. Remember the countless others who fought for freedom during World War II.
