Raymond Gachelin, a name etched onto a street sign, a name whispered on the wind here on Rue Raymond Gachelin. But who was this man? Rue Raymond Gachelin in Sceaux, a quiet street in the Hauts-de-Seine department, holds a story of bravery and sacrifice. Born in Versailles in 1922, Raymond Gachelin grew up in a house at 12 Rue du Four, just a short distance from where we stand now on Rue Raymond Gachelin. He was a young man, a hairdresser by trade, when the shadow of World War II fell upon France. In December 1943, driven by a fierce patriotism, Gachelin joined the Resistance movement. He left the familiar comfort of Sceaux and travelled to the Côtes-du-Nord region, now known as Côtes d’Armor. There, he engaged in acts of sabotage, disrupting German operations and retrieving enemy equipment. His courage and leadership qualities quickly earned him a promotion to sergeant in the French Forces of the Interior (FFI) under Commandant Le Blais. On April 25, 1944, Gachelin’s life took a tragic turn. While on a mission in Perros-Guirec to locate a Waffen SS officer, a German patrol apprehended him. In a desperate attempt to escape, Gachelin broke free, managing to draw his revolver. But before he could fire a single shot, a hail of machine-gun fire cut him down. He was rushed to a hospital in Lannion, but his wounds proved fatal. He died a few hours later on April 26, 1944, at just 22 years old. Today, as we stand on Rue Raymond Gachelin, we remember his sacrifice. This street, named in his honor, serves as a constant reminder of the bravery of those who fought for freedom during a dark period in history. The quiet suburban street holds within its name a story of courage, a testament to the indomitable spirit of resistance.
