In the heart of Chelles, a quiet street bears a powerful name: Rue Raymond Counil. Who was this man, and why is his name etched onto the fabric of this town? Raymond Counil was a young Parisian, born in 1923. He was just 20 years old when his life was tragically cut short during the tumultuous days of World War II. Raymond was a member of the French Resistance, bravely fighting against the Nazi occupation. In the summer of 1944, as Paris braced for liberation, Raymond and his comrades were lured into a deadly trap. Promised a cache of weapons by a man claiming to be a British agent, they arrived at Porte Maillot on August 16th. Instead of liberation, they found themselves surrounded by Gestapo agents. They were taken to a garage on Rue d’Armaillé, the air thick with the threat of violence. Later that day, the sound of gunfire echoed through the Bois de Boulogne near the Cascade. Raymond Counil, along with 33 other Resistance fighters, was executed. Their bravery and sacrifice were not in vain. Just days later, Paris was liberated. In Chelles, Raymond’s name lives on, not only on this street but also on a commemorative plaque at the town hall and in the military section of the communal cemetery. His name is a solemn reminder of the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom. The story of Rue Raymond Counil is a poignant echo of a dark time in history, a testament to the enduring spirit of resistance.
