Doesn’t the name Rue Pradier evoke images of a renowned sculptor chiseling away at marble? Let’s explore this Parisian street. It is located in the 19th arrondissement. It might surprise you to learn the street’s name has nothing to do with the famous Franco-Swiss sculptor James Pradier.

Rue Pradier’s story begins in 1848. This was when it was officially named. The name actually comes from a former landowner in the area.

Rue Pradier stretches 275 meters. It starts at 69 Rue Rébeval and ends at 51 Rue Fessart. The street is about 12 meters wide.

Although the street isn’t directly linked to James Pradier, let’s talk about the artist. He was indeed a celebrated figure. James Pradier was best known for his neoclassical sculptures. Pradier’s legacy graces Paris and beyond.

Pradier contributed significantly to the city’s artistic heritage. One can find examples of his work in various locations. He created public statues and monuments. He also worked on cathedrals and churches.

Consider Pradier’s involvement with Parisian landmarks. He created the bust of Daniel Auber at the Opéra de Paris. Pradier also sculpted Industry at the Palais Brongniart. This building now serves as the Bourse de Paris or Stock Exchange.

Don’t forget the Assemblée Nationale. Pradier created Instruction publique, Liberté and Ordre public for this important building. His work also decorates the façade of the Palais du Luxembourg. Pradier added Sagesse, Éloquence, Prudence and Justice to the palace. He also sculpted Guerre, Paix, Jour, Nuit and Un Génie.

Pradier’s influence extends to the Fontaine Molière. He sculpted Comédie légère and Comédie sérieuse for this monument.

Pradier’s work reached Les Invalides. He created statues representing Victory or Napoleon’s military campaigns. He also sculpted statues representing Lille and Strasbourg at the Place de la Concorde.

His talent wasn’t limited to Paris. Pradier created the Fontaine Pradier in Nîmes. He also sculpted Robert III d’Artois at the Château de Versailles.

James Pradier left behind a substantial body of work. The tomb of James Pradier can be found at Père Lachaise Cemetery. Former pupils created bas-reliefs for the tomb.

Rue Pradier may not bear a direct connection to the sculptor James Pradier. Yet, its existence in Paris allows us to reflect on Pradier’s contributions. His sculptures continue to inspire awe and admiration. So, as we stand here on Rue Pradier, let us remember the artist. Let’s appreciate the beauty he brought to Paris and the world.
