Nestled between Avenue du Général-Leclerc and Rue Friant, Rue Poirier-de-Narçay holds a unique story. It whispers tales of political intrigue and urban evolution. This seemingly quiet street in the 14th arrondissement of Paris carries the name of Robert Poirier de Narçay, a prominent French politician who lived from 1859 to 1918. The street’s own history, however, predates its current name. Created in 1902, it was initially known as Rue Jean-Vaury. This was a tribute to the landowner who facilitated the street’s creation. A shift occurred in 1913 when it was renamed Rue d’Orléans. Finally, in 1933, it received its current name, Rue Poirier-de-Narçay, cementing the legacy of the politician within the Parisian landscape. Interestingly, Rue Poirier-de-Narçay isn’t the only street in Paris with “Poirier” in its name. A now-absorbed street called Rue du Poirier existed in the old 7th arrondissement. This historical street had a rich history dating back to the 13th century. It bore various names related to the trades conducted there, like Rue de la Petite-Bouclerie (for buckle makers). It later became Rue du Poirier due to a local shop sign. The existence of these two streets underscores the diverse layers of Parisian history. Rue Poirier-de-Narçay in the 14th arrondissement stands as a testament to a politician’s influence. The vanished Rue du Poirier in the former 7th arrondissement echoes the city’s evolving urban fabric.
