Pierre Bourdeix was born in Lyon in 1906. He died in the same city in 1987. This street was dedicated to him in 2008. It honors his contributions as an architect and urban planner.
Bourdeix was a student of Tony Garnier. He later succeeded Garnier as a professor. This was at the architecture school of Lyon. A plaque commemorates this at Rue René Leynaud.
Bourdeix’s architectural legacy includes iconic structures. He designed the Pont de la Guillotière. He also designed the Maison de la Danse. The town halls of the eighth and ninth arrondissements are his creations too.
Originally, Rue Pierre Bourdeix was an impasse. It began at Rue Abraham Bloch. This was opposite the CAE depot. It was the first street east of Rue de Gerland. It was near the Place.
Development extended the street. In 2019, it connected Rue Bloch to Rue Croix Barret. The street’s architecture is a mix of industrial and residential. The east side features the Promocash warehouse. It has concrete and metal cladding. A short promenade with trees lines the sidewalk.
The west side features a residential complex. These buildings have white and wood facades. They range from two to four stories. Alleys separate the buildings. They reveal sloped roofs. These roofs evoke the sawtooth designs of former factories.
In 2009, Rue Pierre Bourdeix was still under construction. The buildings were still being fitted. In 2017, construction was underway. It aimed to connect the street to Rue de la Croix Barret.
Even in 2019, construction continued. It was especially focused south of Rue Ravier. The roadway and some plots were completed. Public transportation provides easy access to Rue Pierre Bourdeix. Several bus lines stop nearby. These include lines 34, C14 and C4. The closest bus stop is Place Jean Jaurès. It is only a two-minute walk away. The B metro line also serves the street.
Today, Rue Pierre Bourdeix stands as a functional and aesthetic part of Lyon. It links different areas of the 7th arrondissement. It also honors a local architect.
