Could a street in the heart of Paris hold a connection to one of Italy’s greatest poets? Indeed, it can. Rue Pétrarque, a charming street in the 16th arrondissement, takes its name from the renowned Italian poet Petrarch. This street, stretching 160 meters long and 15 meters wide, is shaped like half a “U”. This unique characteristic is a remnant of a bygone era. Originally, Rue Pétrarque, then known as “Rue des Réservoirs,” formed a complete “U” shape. Both ends started and finished at Rue des Moulins. However, the southern part of the “U” disappeared in 1933. The construction of Avenue Paul-Doumer led to its demolition. This event also led to the destruction of the private mansion of opera singer Marie Delna, who had passed away there just a year prior. Today, Rue Pétrarque stands as a tranquil oasis in the bustling city. It’s a testament to the enduring power of history and poetry, reminding us that even amidst modernization, echoes of the past remain.
