How about a journey back to medieval Paris on Rue Paul Vieille? This road whispers tales of knights, kings, and perhaps even a touch of madness.

Rue Paul Vieille history stretches back centuries. It offers glimpses into the lives of Parisians past. The road dates back to 1250. It led north towards the gardens of the Knights Templar fort. This fort stood inside the Philippe-August wall.

After the Charles V wall was built, the road changed. Both parts of the road became the Old Temple Road. They lay inside and outside the old wall.

Let’s talk about Charles VI. Charles VI became King of France in 1380. He was only eleven years old. His reign, however, took a dramatic turn. Charles VI began experiencing bouts of psychosis in his mid-twenties. Some called him Charles the Beloved. Others knew him as Charles the Mad.

Imagine the scene on Rue Paul Vieille during Charles VI’s reign. The king might have passed through here. He was possibly on his way to the Hôte Saint-Pol. It was one of his residences. During periods of mental instability, he might have been unaware of his surroundings.

In 1407, a significant event shook Paris. Louis I, Duke of Orléans, was murdered. The assassination happened in the rue Vieille du Temple. This is close to where we are now on Rue Paul Vieille. John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, claimed responsibility. He called Orléans a tyrant. This act ignited the Armagnac-Burgundian Civil War. It plunged France into chaos.

The National Printworks once stood at No. 87 on the rue Vieille du Temple. In December 1851, soldiers forced workers to print a poster. It announced the dissolution of the National Assembly. Later, in 1871, the National Guard seized the printworks. They sought to defend the Paris Commune.

At the corner of rue des Francs-Bourgeois stands the Hôtel Hérouet. Louis XII’s treasurer built it in 1528. Its flamboyant Gothic style and turrets add character to the area.

Consider the buildings that line the street. Stately residences hint at the wealth and power of those who once lived here. Hotel de Rohan is at N°87. It was built between 1705 and 1708. Armand-Gaston de Rohan lived here. He was the Bishop of Strasbourg and rumored to be Louis XIV’s son.

Today, Rue Paul Vieille is known for its art galleries. They add a vibrant touch to the historic street. They continue a legacy of culture.

As you walk along Rue Paul Vieille, remember its rich past. Knights Templar once walked here. Charles VI, the Mad King, may have passed by. Revolutionaries once fought here. This street is a silent witness to centuries of Parisian life.
