On Rue Montgrand, a whisper of history echoes through the grand facades. Rue Montgrand stretches from Rue Breteuil to Rue de Rome. This street takes its name from a prominent figure, Jean-Baptiste de Montgrand, a former mayor of Marseille. At number 9 Rue Montgrand, a plaque marks the final resting place of writer Frédéric Ozanam. Further down, number 13 holds a grand past. It once housed the wealthy ship owner Roux de Corse. This building was sold to the city of Marseille in 1805. It first served as the residence of the Prefect of Bouches-du-Rhône. Later, in 1891, it was transformed into a girls’ high school, which eventually became Lycée Montgrand. At number 33, the echoes of a demolished mansion linger. The Hôtel Samatan, built in 1748 by Calas, once stood here. In 1768, it was acquired by Jean Timon-David, who passed it on to his daughter and son-in-law, Basile Samatan, in 1786. Even royalty graced its halls. King Charles IV of Spain, dethroned by Napoleon, stayed here. Today, modern buildings replace the lost elegance of Hôtel Samatan. Rue Montgrand isn’t just a street. It’s a living timeline of Marseille, whispering stories of mayors, writers, ship owners, and even exiled kings. It invites you to walk its length and imagine the lives lived within its grand embrace.
