Right here on Rue Mère Thérésa, we find ourselves on a street with a powerful connection. It is named after a woman who dedicated her life to serving the poorest. Mother Teresa, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, left her mark on the world.

But what brought Mother Teresa to Marseille? Let’s step back to October 1980. The atmosphere was charged with emotion. Mother Teresa arrived at Marignane airport. She was greeted by Mgr Etchegaray. She quickly got into a car heading for Marseille. Her destination was the Sainte-Théodore parish. It served as the temporary home for the Missionaries of Charity. This community was located on Rue des Dominicaines.

Cardinal Etchegaray had invited Mother Teresa to establish her order in Marseille. He believed the city needed nuns with a charism for giving. He wanted those who were unconditionally dedicated to the poor. After exchanging letters, Mother Teresa agreed. A small group was formed. The Missionaries of Charity arrived in Marseille.

During her visit, Mother Teresa offered a simple yet profound message. “Give your two hands to serve the poor and your heart to love them”. She knelt in prayer at the parish. The photographer Jean Pagano captured this moment. She blessed everyone before retiring to the community’s modest apartment.

Even though her visit was brief, it had a lasting impact. Even 35 years later, the Missionaries of Charity continued their work. They are in the 3rd arrondissement. They extend their hands and open their hearts to the most vulnerable.

In September 2023, Pope Francis visited a center run by Mother Teresa’s sisters. It was in Saint-Mauront, one of Marseille’s poorest districts. This visit highlights the continued legacy of her work.

Rue Mère Thérésa is more than just a street name. It embodies the spirit of Mother Teresa. It is a reminder of her unwavering commitment to the poor. It is a call to action. This street serves as a lasting tribute to a woman. She inspired countless people to serve others with love and compassion.
