The Rue Martre. A street that holds a dark secret. It’s not evident at first glance, just a simple street in Clichy, a suburb of Paris. But what happened here in 1929 will forever remain etched in the history of the street. It was here, on the 16th of July, that a father and mother, Marcel and his wife, left their two young daughters, Janine and Gisèle, in their small hotel room. The mother went out to buy groceries. When she returned, only the younger daughter, Gisèle, was there. Janine was gone. The desperate parents alerted the police, who began a frantic search for the missing child. Their investigation led them to the hotel’s courtyard, where a small, bloody, white shoe was found. The shoe was identified as Janine’s. The parents were heartbroken. But the real horror was yet to come. The English neighbor, Sydney Harle, confessed to the murder. He claimed he had accidentally hit Janine with his bicycle, taken her to his room to care for her, and then, in a fit of panic, disposed of her body. His story was riddled with inconsistencies. It was quickly discovered that the truth was far more sinister. The bloody shoe wasn’t a mere accident. Harle had strangled the little girl in the hotel, and hidden her body in a suitcase. He then disposed of the suitcase near the Seine. On the 18th of July, the suitcase was found, containing the body of Janine. Harle admitted to the crime. He claimed he was drunk and had acted impulsively. But his story wasn’t convincing. He was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
