Marthe Chenal, a name whispered with reverence in the grand halls of Parisian opera houses. This street, Rue Marthe Chenal, bears the name of a woman who captivated audiences with her voice and stage presence. Born in 1881, Marthe Chenal’s journey to operatic stardom was not an easy one. Initially, her instructors at the Conservatoire de Paris discouraged her musical aspirations, even suggesting a career at the Moulin Rouge. Undeterred, Chenal persisted, studying with Martini and ultimately winning first prize in the conservatory’s singing competition in 1905. That same year, Rue Marthe Chenal’s namesake debuted at the Palais Garnier as Brunehild in Sigurd. She graced that stage for three years, performing roles like Elizabeth in Tannhäuser and Marguerite in Faust. Imagine her powerful voice filling the opulent theater. Her dramatic talent rivaled that of Sarah Bernhardt, earning her the title of “the most beautiful woman in Paris” in the international press. In 1908, Chenal joined the Opéra-Comique, where she premiered in roles such as Aphrodite and starred in works like On ne badine pas avec l’amour. Her performances extended beyond Paris to Monte Carlo and even to New York’s Manhattan Opera House. She even performed at La Scala in Milan. Rue Marthe Chenal reminds us of a performer who transcended the stage, her voice echoing not only within opera houses but also in the patriotic fervor of wartime. On Armistice Day, 1918, she sang La Marseillaise on the steps of the Paris Opera, a powerful moment of national unity. Recordings of her performances, made with Pathé in 1915, still exist, allowing us to hear the voice that enchanted Paris. This street, Rue Marthe Chenal, is more than just a pathway. It’s a tribute to a woman whose talent and determination defied expectations, echoing the spirit of Paris itself.
