What secrets does a street hold? Rue Marie-Madeleine Fourcade whispers tales of resistance and resilience. This modern street, opened around 2004, stands in stark contrast to its past. For much of the 20th century, this area housed the industrial workings of the Savonnerie Lyonnaise and later, the Massimi establishments. Rue Marie-Madeleine Fourcade emerged as part of the Massimi development zone. It’s a broad, short avenue beginning at Avenue Jean Jaurès and ending at Rue de Gerland. A pedestrian walkway slices between buildings, connecting Rue Pré Gaudry to the north and Rue Chateaubriand to the south. The street’s layout is unique. The roadway runs along the south side. The central area features sunken lawns framed by large stones. A pedestrian path nestles at the foot of the buildings on the north side. The buildings facing Avenue Jean Jaurès create a two-part plaza. The northern section boasts a playground, benches, and trees, a perfect winter shelter. The southern part offers shaded respite for summer days. The main stretch of Rue Marie-Madeleine Fourcade curves gently towards Rue Croix Barret. Uniform white buildings, six stories high with a distinct top floor, line both sides. Large interior balconies and concrete bands provide a unified aesthetic. The northernmost building stands out with its decorative iron balcony work. Rue Marie-Madeleine Fourcade honors Marie-Madeleine Fourcade, a key figure in the French Resistance. Born Marie-Madeleine Bridou in 1909, she became known as Méric and then Fourcade through marriages. She led the Alliance resistance network, vital for intelligence gathering with British services. In 1943, Fourcade directed the network from 6 Rue François Dauphin in Lyon. This was the home of Marguerite Berne Churchill. Fourcade even gave birth in Lyon in 1943 while staying with Anne de Mareuil, a journalist. During this time, the Alliance network secured crucial intelligence: the plans for the V1 and V2 factories. This information led to their destruction, a turning point in the war. After the war, she wrote the network’s history, “L’Arche de Noé,” and remained active in resistance-related organizations. She frequently returned to Lyon for commemorative ceremonies, including events at Place Bellecour and the Barbie trial. Today, Rue Marie-Madeleine Fourcade thrives with businesses and services. The plaza area is particularly lively with hotels, a restaurant, taxi and bike stands, a pharmacy, a newsagent, a supermarket, and a bank. The street’s modern conveniences contrast sharply with Fourcade’s clandestine wartime activities, making it a fascinating place to reflect on Lyon’s layered history.
