What secrets lie hidden beneath the pavement of Rue Marcelle Henry? This unassuming street in Athis-Mons whispers tales of courage and sacrifice. It bears the name of Marcelle Henry, a true Parisian hero.

Rue Marcelle Henry isn’t just another street. It’s a testament to the indomitable spirit of a woman who defied the Nazis. Marcelle, a dedicated civil servant, rose through the ranks at the Ministry of Labour. She championed workers’ rights, especially focusing on their health and safety.

But her world changed with the outbreak of World War II. Driven by her unwavering moral compass, she dove headfirst into the Resistance. While maintaining her position at the Ministry, she used her influence to shield fellow resisters and provide refuge to those in need. Her own home became a secret hub, churning out anti-Nazi pamphlets that fueled the flames of defiance.

Marcelle’s bravery extended to aiding Allied soldiers through the VIC escape network. Under the codename “P.1,” she orchestrated safe houses and escape routes. However, her valiant efforts were tragically cut short. Betrayed by an informant, she was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944.

Despite enduring brutal interrogation, Marcelle refused to break, protecting her comrades at great personal cost. Sentenced to death, she was instead deported to the horrors of Ravensbrück concentration camp, later transferred to Torgau, a brutal subcamp of Buchenwald.

Though she miraculously survived the camps and returned to Paris in April 1945, the physical and emotional toll proved too severe. Marcelle Henry, a beacon of resistance, died merely ten days after her liberation. Today, Rue Marcelle Henry stands as a solemn reminder of her unwavering spirit and her fight for a free France. Her story, etched in the very fabric of this street, is a testament to the enduring power of courage and sacrifice.
