“Did you know this quiet street holds a heartbreaking story?” I ask. We stand at the beginning of Rue Marcel Vaisse. Its name may seem ordinary but it speaks volumes. This unassuming street in Paray-Vieille-Poste is named after a man whose life was tragically cut short. A man who deserves to be remembered.

Marcel Vaisse was born on March 4 1902 in Paris’s 13th arrondissement. He was a craftsman a cabinetmaker and fumist. He became a member of the French Communist Party in 1925. He was elected municipal councilor of Paray-Vieille-Poste in 1928. He later became the first deputy mayor in 1935.

The war changed everything. In 1939 the mayor and the entire municipal council were suspended. Marcel’s political activity made him a target. He was arrested on October 24 1940. He was interned at the Aincourt camp. Then he was transferred to Royallieu camp in Compiègne on June 27 1942.

From Compiègne his journey took a horrific turn. On July 6 1942 he was deported to Auschwitz. He arrived on July 8th receiving the number 46165. This number a symbol of dehumanization was tattooed on his left forearm. He was assigned to the installers’ Kommando.

Auschwitz was a living hell. He endured unimaginable suffering. The camp was evacuated on January 18 1945. He then was sent to Gross-Rosen. Gross-Rosen was also evacuated on February 8 1945. He was sent to Mittelbau-Dora on the 11th and received a new number 111038.

Mittelbau-Dora was liberated by American troops. However Marcel Vaisse’s ordeal wasn’t over yet. He was part of an evacuation convoy to Bergen-Belsen. He was liberated on April 15 1945 by British troops. Sadly he did not survive. He died on April 27 1945 during his repatriation.

His sacrifice was not in vain. After the war Paray-Vieille-Poste honored him by naming a street after him. Rue Marcel Vaisse serves as a poignant reminder. It reminds us of the courage and resilience of those who fought against oppression. It is a reminder of the importance of remembering the victims of the Holocaust. It is a testament to the lasting impact of one man’s life. A life cut short far too soon. A life forever etched in this small quiet street.
