Here in Marseille stands Rue Mahboubi Tir. A simple street name yet it holds a powerful story. This unassuming street is named after a remarkable man Mahboubi Tir. He was born far away in Boudheorem near Khenchela in 1915. His name itself is significant. In Arabic Tir means little bird and Mahboubi means beloved.

Mahboubi Tir arrived in Marseille in the late 1950s. He initially set up shop in Saint-Barthlemy’s largest shantytown. His customers were mostly Algerian residents. The shantytown was later replaced by large social housing complexes. Mahboubi moved his shop. He refused a space in the new shopping center. He valued the human connection of his business. He preferred to remain in the Carré de la Busserine. This was a square-shaped building housing several essential businesses.

For over forty years Mahboubi Tir served generations. He was a pillar of the community. He fostered solidarity and care. He was a true example of neighborly compassion. Mahboubi Tir passed away in 1997. The Grand Saint-Barthlemy district transformed through urban renewal. Yet the desire for dignity in a once-segregated area remained. Years of work and mobilization culminated in a fitting tribute. On July 1 2004 the extended Boulevard Jourdan was officially renamed Rue Mahboubi Tir. The street is a lasting symbol of his legacy. It’s a reminder of his commitment to his community. It is a testament to the importance of human connection and kindness.
