Wasn’t Rue Mandar once called Rue Madon? This charming street in the 2nd arrondissement holds a captivating history. Imagine its creation in 1790. It was named after its architect Charles-François Mandar. He lived at number 9. A unique detail is that he deliberately designed all the houses with identical facades. This was a reflection of his egalitarian ideals. His brother’s connections with Danton and Robespierre during the revolution secured him several commissions. Rue Mandar wasn’t just a street. It was a speculative housing development. It saw action during the Insurrection of 1839. Blanqui used a cafe on the corner of Rue Montorgueil as his headquarters. A barricade was even built here during Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte’s coup d’état in 1851. Tragically several people including Denis Dussoubs lost their lives.
