In 17th-century Paris, ambition flickered in Madeleine Béjart’s eyes. Rue Madeleine Béjart, nestled in Argenteuil, echoes this remarkable woman’s name. She was a force of nature. Madeleine Béjart wasn’t just a pretty face. She was a talented actress, a shrewd businesswoman, and a driving force behind one of history’s greatest playwrights, Molière. Born in Paris in 1618, Madeleine was no stranger to the city’s vibrant cultural scene. Some historians believe she acted alongside her brother at the Théâtre du Marais and toured in the provinces. One thing is certain. She captivated the heart of Esprit de Rémond, a nobleman in Gaston d’Orléans’s court. Their love story produced a daughter, Françoise, in 1638. Some historians theorize they had a second daughter, Armande, who was later legally declared Madeleine’s much younger sister. Madeleine Béjart’s destiny intertwined with Molière’s in 1643. Together, they co-founded the Illustre Théâtre. The contract highlighted Madeleine’s importance, granting her equal share and the power to choose her roles. Her performances, especially as Epicaris in Tristan L’Hermite’s “La Mort de Sénèque,” drew acclaim. When the Illustre Théâtre faced financial ruin, Madeleine’s business acumen came to the forefront. She joined Charles Dufresne’s touring company, navigating the complexities of theatrical life for twelve years. Even on the road, she managed her own finances and those of the troupe. Upon returning to Paris in 1658, Madeleine Béjart originated the role of Madelon in Molière’s “Les Précieuses Ridicules,” cementing her place in theatrical history. She later took on roles like Dorine in “Tartuffe” and Frosine in “L’Avare.” Beyond her acting prowess, Madeleine was Molière’s confidante and advisor. Her understanding of the theater and her sharp wit proved invaluable to his career. A year before Molière’s death, in 1672, Madeleine Béjart passed away. She left a considerable fortune to Armande, a testament to their deep bond. Rue Madeleine Béjart serves as a quiet reminder of this extraordinary woman’s life and legacy. She was a true woman of the theater.
