“A small alleyway in Paris, named after a man who lost his life for freedom.” This is Rue Lucien Selva, a narrow street tucked away in Ivry-sur-Seine. While you might think the name “Lucien Selva” sounds like a fancy Parisian cafe owner, it actually refers to a man who faced a terrible fate. This narrow street is a reminder of his bravery, and its story starts in a bakery. Lucien Selva was born in Ivry-sur-Seine in 1913. His grandfather brought the aroma of fresh bread to the neighborhood. But life had other plans for Lucien. He ended up working as a laborer. Back in 1936, he worked in a chocolate factory. But during World War II, he went to war and was arrested by the French police. They found a gun in his home. He was then handed over to the Germans and sentenced to death for illegal possession of weapons. He was executed on February 13, 1942, at Mont-Valérien. It was 1945 when this little alleyway, previously known as “Ruelle des Malicots,” was renamed after Lucien Selva, a tribute to this brave man. The Rue Lucien Selva may appear like any other little street, but it holds a story of resistance and resilience. The history of this street is one of the Parisian neighborhoods’ untold stories, waiting to be discovered by those with a curious eye.
