Hidden within Athis-Mons, Rue Lionel Dubray whispers tales of courage. This street, named after a remarkable young man, offers a poignant glimpse into the French Resistance. Lionel Dubray, born in Joinville-le-Pont in 1923, became a symbol of defiance against Nazi occupation. At just 19, he joined the Francs-Tireurs et Partisans (FTP), a resistance group. He bravely participated in attacks against German forces in occupied Paris. One daring operation involved disrupting a German parade and attacking a Waffen-SS vehicle. He also sabotaged German equipment and facilities. His actions caught the attention of the Gestapo. Dubray, identified and surrounded in a suburban house, managed to escape after a shootout, killing three Gestapo agents. He found refuge in Brittany, joining the French Forces of the Interior (FFI). He became a section leader in the 1st battalion, leading resistance fighters until his capture in Pluméliau on July 14, 1944. After enduring eight days of torture, Lionel Dubray was executed in Colpo on July 22, 1944. He was only 20 years old. His memory is honored not only by this street in Athis-Mons but also by a plaque on his childhood home in Joinville-le-Pont. A commemorative stamp, issued in 1961, further cements his legacy as a hero of the French Resistance. Rue Lionel Dubray stands as a quiet testament to his bravery. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during a dark period in history.
