Is it possible that this unassuming street is named after a painter? This is Rue Lèopold Survage a tribute to an artist with a unique vision. Lèopold Survage was born Lèopold Frèdèric Sturzwage in Moscow in 1879. He died in Paris in 1968. He was of Finnish, Danish and Russian descent.

Survage’s artistic journey began in his father’s piano factory. He worked there as an apprentice. But his heart was set on art. In 1899, he joined the Moscow School of Fine Arts. There he studied under Constantin Korovin and Leonid Pasternak. He saw the private collection of Sergei Shchukin. It included Manet, Gauguin, and Matisse.

In 1908, Lèopold Survage moved to Paris to continue his studies. He studied with Henri Matisse. He also discovered the work of Cézanne. During this time, he decided to Frenchize his name to Survage. Survage met many Parisian artists and integrated into Montparnasse’s art scene.

Lèopold Survage developed his personal style influenced by Cubism. He created an abstract pictorial language. It combined stylized figurative elements with contradictory perspectives. Survage found inspiration in the reflection of a city spectacle. He saw it in a store’s interior mirror. Survage’s work features rhythmic symbolism. This is created by the characteristic form. It accentuates the construction of his compositions. This reflects his way of perceiving the world.

In 1925, Survage traveled to Collioure. His creative path took a new turn. He experimented with light in a new way. He brought a human presence back into his compositions. Lèopold Survage returned to Mediterranean themes. He focused on monumental nudes and scenes of daily life. His color palette evolved. It was limited to ochre, brown, green, blue, and white. He was considered one of the greatest painters of his time.

Lèopold Survage’s artworks include drawings, watercolors, and paintings. “Les rues” from 1913 and “Ville et oiseau” from 1916 showcase his style. Survage also created prints. “L’homme glisse le long des maisons” is one example.

Survage’s art has been showcased in many exhibitions. These include Dance of Colors in Hamburg in 2009. His works are displayed in museums like the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Additionally, in 1922, Survage began designing sets and costumes. He worked for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. He worked on Igor Stravinsky’s opera bouffe, Mavra. In 1937, Survage created monumental panels for the Palais des Chemins de Fer. It was part of the Exhibition of Arts and Technology in Paris.

So as you walk along Rue Lèopold Survage remember the artist. Remember his journey from Moscow to Paris. Think about his unique vision and contribution to modern art.
