“Ever wondered about the hidden stories of Paris streets?” Step onto Rue Léon Jouhaux. This unassuming Parisian street in the 10th arrondissement holds a captivating past. It’s a journey through time. From its humble beginnings to its present-day status. Rue Léon Jouhaux has witnessed remarkable transformations.

Originally. it was known as the Passage du Vauxhall. This name hints at a vibrant entertainment scene. The Vauxhall d’été a popular summer garden and dance hall flourished here. It provided entertainment for Parisians until the Restoration period. The area later became the site of a less glamorous public ball. This was eventually replaced by the Tivoli-Vauxhall. This then gave way to the Eden Palace and finally the Tivoli Cinema. Residential buildings now stand where these bustling establishments once entertained.

But the story doesn’t end there. The street’s history is intertwined with that of Louis Daguerre. The pioneer of photography. He opened his Parisian diorama and laboratory on Rue Léon Jouhaux in 1822. It was here that he perfected the daguerreotype process. Sadly. a devastating fire destroyed the diorama in 1839. A plaque commemorates this significant location. It reads “Here stood from 1822 to 1839 Daguerre’s diorama and laboratory where he perfected the invention of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce discovering the daguerreotype”.

Another fascinating element is the presence of a customs warehouse. It was constructed on former Marais land along the Canal Saint-Martin. Number 11 Rue Léon Jouhaux housed this important structure. This building was tragically destroyed by fire in 1947. It was later rebuilt between 1951 and 1957. Currently it is being extensively renovated. It will soon become the headquarters of the Paris-Île-de-France Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry. It will be a modern hub for business and commerce.

The street’s name itself tells a story. It was changed to honour Léon Jouhaux. A renowned French trade unionist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. His legacy adds another layer to this historically rich street.

The presence of the Garde Républicaine at the Caserne Vérines at number 2 further enriches its story. The post office on number 13 adds another element to this street. Even the Spanish National Confederation of Labour occupied premises here after World War II. This street reflects the diverse historical movements that shaped the 10th arrondissement of Paris.

So as you stroll down Rue Léon Jouhaux today. remember the layers of history beneath your feet. This seemingly ordinary street vibrates with stories of entertainment. innovation. commerce and social activism. The past continues to resonate within the walls of Rue Léon Jouhaux.
