Can you imagine a daredevil pilot landing a plane on a rooftop? In the heart of Paris, Rue Jules Védrines commemorates just such a man. Jules Védrines, a name synonymous with daring feats of aviation, forever linked to a spectacular stunt. This street honors the aviator who landed his Caudron G.3 biplane on the roof of the Galeries Lafayette department store. This incredible event happened on January 19, 1919. Rue Jules Védrines, a quiet street in Malakoff, might seem an unlikely place to celebrate such a flamboyant act. But it serves as a reminder of the man who pushed the boundaries of flight. Védrines, born in Saint-Denis in 1881, wasn’t born into the world of aviation. He started as a roofer, then a plumber. His fascination with flight led him to become a mechanic. He eventually worked for the British pilot-actor Robert Loraine. This experience ignited his passion for flying. He earned his pilot’s license in 1910 and quickly made a name for himself. One of his early exploits involved showering the Mi-Carême procession in Paris with flowers from his plane. He won the Paris-Madrid air race in 1911. He even tried his hand at politics, running for the Chamber of Deputies. Védrines was a true showman. The Galeries Lafayette stunt was a culmination of his daring spirit. The rooftop landing earned him a 25,000 franc prize. But it also resulted in a 16 franc fine for flying over Paris. The feat was a sensation. It captured the public’s imagination. Sadly, just three months later, Védrines died in a plane crash. He was attempting an inaugural flight from Paris to Rome. Rue Jules Védrines remembers a man who lived life on the edge, a pioneer of the skies who dared to dream and achieve the impossible. His name echoes through history. His legacy lives on, not just on this street but in the annals of aviation.
