Did you know that Rue Jules Lepetit is named after a man of strong convictions? He was a French activist. Jules Lepetit was born Louis Bertho in Nantes. He disappeared in Russia around October 1 1920.

Rue Jules Lepetit commemorates a life dedicated to libertarian ideals. He was an anarchist. He was also a syndicalist. Lepetit’s story is one of rebellion. It is also about fighting for what you believe in.

Lepetit first worked at the Saint-Nazaire shipyards. He began at just 11 years old. At 15 he participated in his first strike. This marked the beginning of his activism.

To avoid military service Lepetit used false identities. He went by Jules Marius Lepetit. This allowed him to continue his activism undisturbed.

In 1912 in Paris Lepetit joined the Féderation communiste anarchiste. He worked with Louis Lecoin. He also joined the terrassiers union. His powerful voice captivated audiences. People admired his independence and critical thinking.

Lepetit was arrested in 1917. This happened at the Libertaire headquarters. He managed the clandestine publication of a journal titled Exigeons la Paix. He was sentenced to two years in prison for antimilitarism.

In 1920 Lepetit traveled to Moscow. He attended the Second Congress of the Communist International. He went with Raymond Lefebvre and Marcel Vergeat. They met with Victor Serge. They also met with Marcel Body.

Lepetit expressed his disappointment with the congress. He felt officials only showed them the good side of the revolution. However he still believed in the revolution’s goals. He supported the expropriation of capitalist property. He also supported the development of public education. He believed in the fight against alcoholism.

The circumstances of Lepetit’s disappearance are mysterious. He and his comrades vanished in Russia. This led to doubts about the Bolshevik government’s involvement. Some believe they were assassinated. Others think they died in an accident.

At the congress held by the CGTU in Saint-Étienne the Italian anarchist Armando Borghi spoke. He declared about this affair. He knew Lepetit and Vergeat. He had met them in Moscow. He knew there was no guarantee of safety even in Russia.

Before leaving Moscow Lepetit wrote a letter. It was addressed to the terrassiers union. He deplored how difficult it was to form an exact opinion. He noted officials only showed the good side. They concealed the reverse of the medal.

Despite his criticisms Lepetit remained committed to the revolution. He believed it could create a truly beautiful society. But he stressed the importance of support from Western workers.

Marcel Body noted Lepetit’s hostility. He did not like a social system dominated by a single party. He also did not like its contempt for individuals. Lepetit saw this throughout Russia.

Today Rue Jules Lepetit stands as a reminder. It is a reminder of a man who fought for his beliefs. His life was marked by courage and conviction. Though his end remains shrouded in mystery his legacy lives on. It lives on in the street that bears his name. It lives on in the ideals he championed.
