Approaching Rue Jules de Jouy in the 18th arrondissement, one might overlook its modest length. A mere 40 meters long, Rue Jules de Jouy connects Rue Diard to Rue Cyrano-de-Bergerac. This seemingly insignificant street holds a fascinating tale. Rue Jules de Jouy honors the prolific Montmartre songwriter, Jules Théodore Louis Jouy (1855-1897). His life and work were deeply intertwined with the vibrant cabaret scene of late 19th-century Montmartre. He was a contemporary of Aristide Bruant. Jouy was known for his rapid songwriting, producing lyrics “like an apple tree produces apples.” He collaborated with numerous publications. Some were radical and short-lived, like the quickly censored “Journal des Merdeux.” He found success at the Chat Noir, but his personality led him to co-found a rival cabaret, the Chien Noir. One of his greatest successes, “Derrière l’omnibus,” was popularized by the singer Paulus. Jouy also collaborated with Jules Vallès on “Le Cri du Peuple.” His song “La Fille d’Ouvrier,” offered a poignant portrayal of a working-class woman’s life. However, his legacy is marred by his antisemitic writings in publications like “La Libre Parole Illustrée.” Despite this dark side, Rue Jules de Jouy stands as a reminder of this complex figure’s significant contribution to Montmartre’s artistic history.
