“A street named after a resistant” you might think. But Rue Jean Wirbel in Drancy holds more than just a name. It whispers a story of courage and sacrifice. This quiet street honors Jean Wirbel a forgeron a communist and a résistant during World War II. Born in 1886 in Moyeuvre-Grande he later lived at 31 rue Danton in Drancy. His life intersected with the tumultuous events of 1944.

Jean Wirbel’s story isn’t widely known. He wasn’t a general leading armies. He wasn’t a famous figurehead. Yet his actions were heroic. He bravely tried to negotiate with the German occupiers to protect fellow résistants. This act of daring earned him a terrible fate. He was imprisoned and executed on August 19 1944 at La Patte d’Oie in Gonesse.

His name was added to the plaque dedicated to the FFI-FTP (French Forces of the Interior-Francs-tireurs et Partisans). The Drancy municipal council further immortalized his memory by naming a street after him.
