A hush falls over the crowd. We stand before Rue Jean Baudin a seemingly unremarkable street. But its quiet facade hides a tumultuous past.

This unassuming Parisian street bears witness to a pivotal moment in French history. It was here on December 2 1851 that a barricade rose. This barricade was a defiant stand against Napoleon III’s coup d’état. The courageous citizens of Paris fought for the Republic.

The story begins with Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Baudin a doctor and member of the Assemblée Nationale. He was a staunch republican. Baudin refused to accept Napoleon III’s seizure of power. He joined the insurrection. He stood firm on the barricade that once stood here.

A common story claims that Baudin famously declared “I’ll show you how someone dies for twenty-five francs”. This refers to the daily allowance received by members of the Assemblée Nationale. It was in stark contrast to the meager wages of ordinary workers. His words were a rallying cry. They ignited the spirit of the revolutionaries.

Baudin’s actions were a powerful symbol of resistance against tyranny. His sacrifice however was in vain. The coup was successful. Many were killed that day including Baudin. He was shot and killed on the barricade.

He wasn’t just killed on December 3rd 1851 but his death had far-reaching consequences. It became a symbol of republican ideals. Years later a campaign sought to erect a statue in his honor. Unfortunately this statue was later melted down during the Nazi occupation. His memory was erased by the Vichy government. The rationale given was to recover nonferrous metals. However it was really a political maneuver to silence dissent and remove undesirable figures from public memory.

Today Rue Jean Baudin is a quiet reminder of this struggle. This street stands as a silent testament to the bravery of those who fought for the Republic. It is a place of quiet reflection. It is a reminder of a pivotal moment in French history a moment of resistance and sacrifice. Let us remember Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Baudin and the many others who fought alongside him. They fought for a better future a future of liberty and equality. Let us honor their memory.
